A better job, a promotion and a higher income along with being more attractive are all perks of taking care of the way we look. We all know this yet when life gets busy with work and life commitments, taking care of our appearance is often one of the first things that get neglected. 

As a personal trainer, I have worked with clients of all ages and seen firsthand how those who look after their appearance tend to look younger than their years. Even when life becomes more complicated with heavier workloads, hectic schedules and ever-increasing family commitments, your appearance doesn’t have to suffer. The truth is that we all age, there is no escaping that fact. Whilst we will never look as we did when we were in our late teens, personally, we can make an effort and as a result, look younger than we are.

If you feel that the years have flown by and before you knew it, you’re looking older than you are, don’t worry. I feel the same! Here are some great tips on how to take care of your skin to help reduce the signs of aging.

Face Focus 

A quick glance at your face is often what many people will judge you on. As somebody that spends more of their professional life reading people through their body language and facial expression, I can tell you from experience, that your face says a lot about you.

As the largest organ of your body, your skin reflects your lifestyle and general health. Long work days and the stresses of life can quickly add up to dull skin, heavy bags around the eyes and wrinkles. 

The good news is that you can have a healthier and younger-looking face. Here are 8 basic steps you can take right now to target your facial skin. 

8 Basics For Looking Younger For Men 

Your facial skin is like a billboard advertising who you are and the lifestyle you live. For healthier and younger-looking skin, you can make a few small lifestyle changes that will all add up to impressive results that you and others will notice. 

Regardless of your age, these basics will help refresh your skin and take years off your face. 

1. Stay out of the sun 

One of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking healthy is to avoid the sun. 

Photoaging is premature aging of your skin caused by overexposure to the sun’s rays. Being outside is good for us all but we need to find a balance when spending time out in the sun. 

Direct sunlight damages and darkens your skin making you look older, but we also need some sunshine to generate Vitamin D. How long you should spend in the sun depends on how dark your skin is and where you are in the world. The sun is stronger the closer you are to the equator and at higher altitudes. 

Tip: Avoid direct sun exposure if you can during the hottest hours of the day (generally between 11 am - 3 pm). When you’re in direct sun, wear a hat that covers your face and use a sunscreen with SPF 50+.


2. Relax your face 

Being in a good mood and feeling relaxing can do wonders for your face. Admittedly that’s not the easiest thing to do when you’re stressed but being aware of this is the first step. 

Wrinkles first start to appear on your forehead and around your eyes and mouth. Your skin is like a sheet of paper, the more it is “folded” the deeper and deeper the lines and creases develop. High stress causes your face to tense up with prolonged and highly repeated frowning being a common cause of deep forehead, brow and eye wrinkles. 

Unfortunately, when you work, it’s easy to have your face scrunched up without realizing it. The stress and focus can cause your facial muscles to automatically activate and crease your skin. When you find yourself tense, pause for a moment and try to fully relax your face. Doing this regularly can quickly build the habit of having a resting face that is relaxed, less wrinkled and visibly smoother.

3. Sleep more

Is beauty sleep really a thing? You bet it is! Sleep is literally a regenerative process that allows you to rest, heal and recover. And that includes your skin.

Poor sleep shows up most noticeably on your face. This is because your face is highly vascularized. A lack of sleep can cause blood to collect under your eyes which becomes visible as dark circles. 

For healthy skin more sleep is vital. Studies show that between 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night is optimal. Experts recommend going to bed early and waking up naturally without an alarm clock. This allows your body to find a more natural sleeping pattern.

4. Sleep on your back

On the topic of sleep, how you sleep is also important. As you sleep, your face can be stretched and “scrunched up” on your pillow. Can you relate? If you’re lucky, you spend a third of your life sleeping. If you’re sleeping in a position that creases and folds your facial skin for hours and hours every night, wrinkles and fine lines will get more visible. How you sleep (the position) is an often overlooked but very important factor for skin care. If you can, sleep on your back. This will prevent your facial skin from being creased during the night as you roll around on your pillow. 

Note: If you can’t sleep on your back or you find yourself regularly rolling over onto your side or front, make sure to get yourself some soft pillow covers and wash them regularly.

5. Exercise Regularly 

Regular exercise is not only good for your general health and well-being, but it also keeps your skin firm and clear. 

When you exercise you increase your blood circulation around your whole body, including your skin. This increased blood flow carries oxygen and nutrients to your skin and accelerates the removal of waste products to give you a healthy glow. 

In the long term, this increased blood flow increases your skin cell turnover and boosts your collagen production to give you a firmer and fresher-looking face.

6. Wash your face twice a day 

How often do you wash your face? Do you wash it straight after sweating? 

If not, you should do! Your skin is home to a microbiome made up of both helpful and harmful microorganisms. They love sweat and if you leave it on your skin for too long, you may start to notice a variety of skin problems. Keep your skin healthy regularly by washing it straight after exercising or excessive sweating. 

Sebum is an oily, waxy substance produced by your skin’s sebaceous glands to protect your skin. It is constantly being made and can accumulate on the surface of your skin causing visible problems such as oily skin. Think of sebum as a glue. Your skin is constantly renewing itself. New skin cells take the place of old skin cells that die and are shed from the skin’s surface. Now let’s add all the dead skin cells to the glue, and on top of this let’s add the dust and dirt from daily living. You see where I’m going! Clean skin is healthy-looking skin. 

Dermatologists recommend washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.  

7. Drink water 

You’ve probably heard that being hydrated is important for your skin. Why is this? Your skin can effectively dry out, leaving it looking dull and tired. This is because your skin naturally hydrates itself by pulling fluid from the capillary blood flow in your skin, if you’re dehydrated there isn’t enough fluid to pull from and your skin inevitably dries out. 

If your body isn’t getting enough water, there is less water being transferred to your skin from your blood circulation. To stay hydrated, a minimum of 2 liters of water a day are recommended for men. If you’re active or live in a hot climate, aim for significantly more.
